A group of researchers from IBM Japan, the University of Tokyo and Yamaha Motors created the AI Painting Project and an AI-based robot that's capable of creating paintings on its own, rather than generating them at random. The bot boasts its own set of values and is designed to work with different concepts to create different works of art. In this way, the robot can be given certain parameters, such as creating a piece with just 30 brushstrokes or 300. Like a real painter, the robot can be seen pausing to "consider" values before making an artistic choice.

The innovative robot was presented at the virtual SXSW 2021 as part of the Todai to Texas showcase.

In the future, the team will be integrating a visual component that lets the AI system see its own paintings as it works on them.
