Abu Dhabi is preparing to add another landmark to its growing cultural landscape with the announcement of Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a major performing arts institution set to open on Saadiyat Island in 2030. The project marks a significant step in the emirate’s long-term cultural vision, reinforcing its position as a global hub for creativity and artistic exchange.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, highlighting the strategic importance of the initiative.

Developed under the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Dar Al Funoon will serve as a permanent home for live performance, bringing together artists from the UAE, the Arab world, and beyond. Through international collaborations, artistic residencies, and large-scale productions, the institution aims to foster cultural dialogue and inspire future generations of creatives.

Designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry, the project carries his signature bold vision. Its fluid architectural form, inspired by the movement of fabric, and its transparent façade are intended to create a direct connection between audiences and the artistic process itself.

The venue will feature a 2,000-seat main theatre, a 3,500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, a 400-seat studio theatre, and a 250-seat jazz venue, accommodating more than 6,000 visitors across its various performance spaces.

Located in the heart of Saadiyat Cultural District, Dar Al Funoon will stand alongside some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Once completed, it is expected to become a dynamic year-round destination for opera, ballet, theatre, jazz, and multidisciplinary performances.

With Dar Al Funoon, Abu Dhabi continues to shape a cultural legacy that not only celebrates artistic excellence but also positions the city at the forefront of the global arts scene.
