For decades, the story of the Arab world has often been told through the eyes of outsiders. At the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation on Saadiyat Island, a new exhibition is shifting that perspective entirely.
"Seeing Ourselves" is more than a photography exhibition—it is a powerful statement about identity, belonging, and self-representation. Developed in collaboration with Zayed University, the exhibition places young Emirati artists at the center of the narrative, allowing them to explore their heritage, environment, and contemporary realities through their own creative lens.
The exhibition brings together a diverse collection of photographs capturing architecture, landscapes, portraits, and cultural symbols. Each work reflects the complex dialogue between tradition and modernity that defines life in the UAE today. From desert scenes transformed by rapid development to portraits celebrating traditional attire in contemporary settings, the images reveal how a new generation navigates cultural continuity within a rapidly evolving society.
One of the exhibition's most compelling aspects is its emphasis on reflection—both literal and symbolic. Several artworks invite viewers to see themselves within the photographs, transforming observation into participation. In doing so, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider their own relationship with identity, memory, and place.
What makes "Seeing Ourselves" particularly significant is the fact that it was created entirely by women students. Beyond producing the photographs, the participants were involved in every stage of the exhibition process, including curation, graphic design, and exhibition development. Their collective vision has resulted in a cohesive visual language that celebrates both Emirati culture and female creativity.
The project also highlights the importance of nurturing emerging artistic voices beyond the classroom. Through mentorship and hands-on experience, these students were given the opportunity to transform academic learning into a professional exhibition, demonstrating the remarkable talent shaping the future of the UAE's cultural landscape.
In a region where conversations around identity continue to evolve, "Seeing Ourselves" offers something refreshingly authentic: a portrait of the UAE created by those living its story every day. The result is an exhibition that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant—a reminder that the most powerful narratives are often the ones we tell ourselves.
"Seeing Ourselves" is on view at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation until August 31, 2026.
