In a new cultural publication that bridges photography, poetry, and memory, Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed turns her lens toward one of the Gulf’s most enduring symbols: the camel.

Her latest project, Ode to a Camel, published with luxury house Assouline, is a visual and literary tribute to the animal deeply rooted in Emirati identity and desert life. Far more than a coffee-table book, it becomes an artistic meditation on heritage, resilience, and the emotional landscape of the desert.

Through fine art photography captured by Sheikha Latifa herself, the book blends sweeping desert scenes with intimate portraits of camels, revealing them not only as symbols of survival, but as companions to human history. The images are paired with poetry and reflective essays that explore the relationship between people, nature, and memory in the Arabian desert.

The publication presents the camel as a living presence rather than a historical relic. It embodies patience, strength, and continuity — qualities that remain deeply connected to the identity of the United Arab Emirates. As described in the book, the camel becomes both subject and symbol, moving between documentation and emotional reflection.

Designed as part of Assouline’s prestigious Legends Collection, the 228-page volume also highlights the publisher’s signature craftsmanship, transforming the book into a collectible object. Yet beyond its material elegance, the work positions itself as a cultural archive, preserving and reinterpreting the visual language of desert heritage.

What distinguishes Ode to a Camel is its refusal to separate art from memory. Instead, it merges photography, storytelling, and cultural reflection into a unified narrative. The camel becomes a bridge between past and present — between ancestral life in the desert and contemporary artistic expression.

This project also reflects Sheikha Latifa’s broader engagement with the arts, where cultural identity is explored through visual storytelling and creative preservation. In her words, the work is a contemplation of the values of patience, endurance, and the deep connection between humans and nature.

Beyond its artistic dimension, proceeds from the book will support charitable initiatives, adding a humanitarian layer to a project already grounded in cultural preservation.

As the UAE continues to expand its cultural production globally, Ode to a Camel stands as a poetic reminder that heritage is not only preserved in museums or archives, but also in images, emotions, and stories that continue to evolve.
