The UAE’s contemporary art scene has grown remarkably over the last decade, moving from informal, artist-led initiatives to globally recognized institutions. The exhibition Rays, Ripples, Residue at 421 Arts Campus, Abu Dhabi, reflects on this journey, offering a rich retrospective of experimentation, mentorship, and creative community building in the Emirates.
Curated in three chapters, the exhibition examines how grassroots efforts, individual mentorship, and experimental spaces have shaped the UAE’s art landscape:
- Leading to the Middle – Munira Al Sayegh highlights the early “nuclei” of creative momentum, from shared studios to pioneering independent institutions like Bait 15, which transformed domestic spaces into hubs for exhibitions, residencies, and dialogue.
- Ghosts of Arrival – Nadine Khalil explores the structures and narratives that continued to shape contemporary practice, reflecting on the interplay of performance, material remnants, and re-staging earlier experiments.
- SUN™ – Murtaza Vali curates works responding to the solar element as a life condition. These pieces expand the conversation to environmental, economic, and energy-related concerns, showcasing how artists interpret the Middle East’s intense natural and industrial conditions.
From Hashel Al Lamki’s Space is Holy to Mona Ayyash and Nadine Ghandour’s Partial Sea View, the exhibition explores materials, found objects, and unconventional spaces to map the collective history of experimentation. Works like Liham Mula Sa Araw and SUNSHINE use satire to interrogate consumer culture and the symbolic mobilization of happiness, while sculptural pieces by Raja’a Khalid and Pratchaya Phinthong translate solar and industrial forces into physical and conceptual art.
Rays, Ripples, Residue ultimately celebrates the provisional, iterative, and collaborative practices that laid the groundwork for the UAE’s contemporary art ecosystem, reminding audiences of the importance of experimentation and shared creative conditions.
