Rewind opens a new artistic phase for the Dalloul Artist Collective as it hosts a remarkable solo exhibition by Yervant Hawarian, organised in partnership with the Ramzi and Saeda Dalloul Art Foundation. Presented at DAC Art Space in the Stone Garden Building, the exhibition revisits the golden age of Lebanese cinema through one of its most iconic visual forms: the hand-painted movie posters that once defined the rhythm and atmosphere of Beirut’s streets.
Between the 1950s and the 1990s, these posters were more than advertisements—they were a public stage. Towering above sidewalks, they blended graphic artistry, popular culture, and the city's evolving urban landscape. They shaped memory, identity, and imagination across generations.
In Rewind, Hawarian returns to the imagery that marked his early career, transforming these cinematic icons into contemporary artworks. Painted anew on linen, his compositions amplify the drama once captured in a single film frame. Through bold contrasts, punchy colour palettes, and meticulously staged scenes, Hawarian condenses entire narratives into static yet charged moments. What were once promotional tools now emerge as autonomous artworks—testaments to craft, labour, and the lost tradition of hand-painted graphic storytelling.
Yet Rewind is more than nostalgia. It positions the act of revisiting as a form of cultural dialogue—an invitation to reconsider the relationship between image, place, and collective memory. By shifting these posters from the street to the gallery, Hawarian elevates them to historical artefacts that reflect not only Lebanon’s visual identity but also the broader trajectory of Arab art.
